The DAC is an impressive direct response to the ongoing climate crisis, armed with a formidable goal of pulling 4000 tons of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere every year.

How does this giant vacuum work? To the untrained eye, the DAC may resemble an oversized air conditioning unit. Yet, its function is far more intricate and vital for our survival. The operation begins with large fans that draw ambient air into the system. Once inside, the air meets specially designed filters. These are no ordinary filters. They are primed with a proprietary solution that binds to carbon dioxide particles on contact, effectively capturing CO2 while the rest of the air, minus this greenhouse gas, is released back into the atmosphere.

After a filter filling, which can take several hours, the next round of magic happens. The filters are heated up to around 100 degrees Celsius and in this heat, the CO2 particles are released from the solution. This CO2 can then be collected, concentrated, and later purified for various uses, or even transported for underground storage. In the case of this particular DAC, the collected CO2 is mixed with water and pumped deep into the ground, where over time, it will mineralize, transforming into a rock and effectively removing it from the atmosphere permanently.

This approach, operating at the intersection of technology and sustainability, is not without its challenges. These giants consume a significant amount of energy to operate, raising concerns about its overall effectiveness in combating climate change. However, Climeworks and CarbFix ensure the electricity used comes from renewable sources, making it a sustainable option. Moreover, the companies are continuously making advancements to reduce the DAC’s energy requirements.

Additionally, the DAC is not intended to replace efforts to reduce carbon emissions but serves as a complement to them. Its existence underlines the importance of multi-faceted approaches in tackling the climate crisis.
